This is a picture of one of Columbus's ships it is called the Santa
Maria. Christopher Columbus was a sailor who like many others wanted
to find out more about the world. Like many others he wanted to
find out if the world was flat. On some medieval maps people drew
sea serpents so that the would put people off. But this did not
put Columbus off. He asked Queen Isabella of Spain for some money.
She gave it to him so he set out on his journey. He found a crew
of ninety men and made three ships called the Pinta, the Nina and
the Santa Maria. On his way he found an island and called it San
Salvador. Soon he was sure he had found a new route to india and
called it the West Indies.

The Santa Maria was about 29 metres long. It had been wrecked on
Christmas day, when a crewman had left a cabin boy at the wheel.
The Santa Maria set sail with Columus on board, on August 3rd 1492.
Columbus found land while on The Santa Maria at 2pm on October 10th,
and named it San Salvador which means 'Holy Saviour'. He spent the
next three months sailing round nearby islands on teh Santa Maria,
looking for gold.
